Summer is in full swing here in the great city of Chicago. This means lots of great events and outdoor activities to enjoy, and of course lots of great weather! While this is a time to have fun, summer is also a time to think about health and safety. We can get some hot temperatures here in the Windy City, so it is important to remember to stay safe.
Here are Some Safety Tips for Summer in Chicago
Stay in the shade as much as possible, especially during the middle of the day when the sun is the strongest.
Put on sunscreen! Use at least SPF 30 and apply 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply throughout the day, especially after swimming.
Drink plenty of water. If temps go higher than 90 degrees, make sure you are drinking extra water.
Supervise kids and pets when playing outside to make sure they are not overheating. Do not leave any kids or pets in a hot car.
Check on elderly family members and neighbors. They are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
Wear light clothing. Try to get clothing with built in SPF. Don’t forget your hat and sunglasses.
Use bug spray, especially at night to prevent mosquito bites.
Recognize Heat-Related Illness
This is particularly important for those working more labor intensive jobs during the summer. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke so you can seek medical attention immediately.
Heat exhaustion symptoms:
- Shallow breathing
- Clammy skin
- Excessive sweating or lack of sweating
- Fast pulse
If you believe you are suffering from heat exhaustion, get out of the heat immediately and cool down. If the symptoms do not improve, seek medical attention.
Heat stroke symptoms:
- Red, hot and dry skin
- Racing pulse
If you believe you are suffering from heat stroke, you should seek medical attention immediately.
